Why You Should Create a Storage Guide

Create a Storage Guide*...

  1. Of important content items so that they can be reused throughout your site,
  2. For containing content items that may need updating (see linking vs. copying).

Types of Stuff in your Storage Guide...

  1. Catalog Search Boxes,
  2. Database Search Boxes/Widgets,
  3. Reference Services or Ask Us information (Phone/Email/SMS/IM),
  4. Library Hours,
  5. Library Newsletter,
  6. ...and much much more!

Important Tip:

Encourage staff to link-to resources in your storage guide.

Why?

So you can reap the benefits of creating a connection between the original (parent) content and linked (child) content so that if content is updated in the original (parent) then those updates are pushed out to linked (child) content.

*What's a storage guide? It's just that... a guide in which you store stuff for later use or for re-use in other guides.

See Reusing 101: Linking vs. Copying.

Examples

Database/Federated Search/Discovery Search Boxes:

Catalog Search Boxes:

Reference/Ask Us Services:

Consistent display of Reference services across all guides.

Adding a new service? Easy, just add to original (parent) box and it will update all linked boxes.

What boxes do your Authors need to reuse?

1. Inquire with staff,

2. Create storage guide with reusable content,

3. Alert Staff to link-to resources.
