LibGuides is Truly Mobile!
That's right, your guides have gone mobile! We just released our true mobile version of LibGuides & Campus/Community Guides and have already heard some rave reviews. (Thank you!)
Now whenever anyone visits your LibGuides site using their mobile device, they're automatically redirected to the mobile version.
This version will provide them with a super easy way to get the information they need while on the go.
Even better? As you can see in our Coming Soon! box, we're also developing a Mobile Website Builder! Keep an eye out for that...
New LibGuides Features
Those of you who follow the Springshare Support Blog know: we had a code update recently. This means we have lots of fun new features to share with you! :)
Several awesome (and much asked for) new features are highlighted below - even more are listed to the right!
API Caching Change - 6 hour delay
We recently made a change to the way our API works: the content is now cached for 6 hours after the initial call to our database.
So, if you've been wondering why you don't immediately see that new guide in your list of guides on your Library homepage (outside of LibGuides ;), you now know why!
This change brings calls to our database for APIs in line with the behavior for RSS feeds and our search engine. That content is also cached for a period of time, reducing both the number of times the database gets hit for the same process and speeding up the time it takes to load the information for your users.
Define Your Own Homepage Redirect
Want to set a custom guide as your LibGuides homepage? You can! Just create a guide, give it a friendly URL and publish it, then set your site to automatically redirect to that guide anytime anyone goes to your main URL. (Remember: don't set the redirect until the guide is published!)
For example, if I define the homepage redirect to go to a specific "custom homepage" guide, anytime anyone goes to http://mysite.libguides.com/ they'll automatically be brought to my custom homepage guide at http://mysite.libguides.com/home.
Guide Redirects, too!
New to LibGuides? Want to point your users to both your old guides and your new LibGuides? Want to put all of that information in 1 easy to use place? Guide redirects to the rescue!
You can now create a guide that redirects to a completely different URL outside of your LibGuides system. Just create a new guide, give it a name and description, then define the URL people should be brought to when they click on the link for that guide.
That way, the title & description are searchable/findable in your LibGuides system even though the content lives somewhere else!
CSS Classes for Box Types
Ever want to change the way all of your Links & Lists boxes look? Or maybe the Embedded Videos? Now you can!
Each box type now has a class associated with it...so you can use CSS to change the look of any box type in your system all at the same time!
For details on changing these (including the class names for the different boxes), check out our Using CSS to Customize Boxes guide.
More New Features & Fixes!
- The Guide Index screen now has filters for subject category and by letter (first letter of the guide title).
- Added a "Books from the Catalog" tab to the Asset Management screen.
- Linked boxes will now inherit box color customizations from the original box
- Interactive Polls boxes and Links & Lists star ratings now allow 1 vote per computer per hour, rather than 1 vote per computer per day.
- "Copy Page" issue fixed: it no longer copies the homepage of the guide no matter which page you actually select.
Here's a taste of our Upcoming Attractions...
Keep an eye on the Support Blog for the latest updates!
- Mobile Website Builder:
With our upcoming optional Mobile Website Builder module creating mobile websites will be as easy and as fun as creating guides! Look for this exciting new option before the year end!
- Custom Partner Content Box:
A “partner” site can develop a custom script on their server (to gather data from their database, etc.) which could be called by a box on your guide.
For example, an interactive search box so your users could search/get results right in your guide!
