A-Z Resource List Management Information
What is it?
The A-Z Resource List Management tool allows you to automatically create a guide containing a list of all of your databases.
- The first time you run the tool, it'll create the guide & import the databases.
- After it's run, add any additional links to your lists.
- Also add any additional pages/boxes you want.
- Run it periodically to maintain your list.
How does it work?
You can use either a guide you've already created or have the tool create a new guide for you. If you are going to use a guide that already exists in your system, please make sure it's set up properly for the import before you run the A-Z Resource List Management tool (more below).
First the tool checks to see if any of your guides has Links & Lists or Simple Web Links boxes named A, B, etc. If not, it creates a page for each letter and a Links & Lists box on that page for that letter. There is also a page/box named # to catch all of the other resources that don't fall under a letter (i.e. those that start with numbers, etc.).
Then it imports information from your Serials Solution account (using your client identifier) and places each link in the appropriate box.
Since this guide is just like any other guide in your system, you can choose to add additional links, boxes, and pages to the guide.
You can also reuse these links anywhere else in your system! Create subject lists, easily add links to your research guides, etc.
Will it import my e-journals and e-books, too?
At this time, the tool will only import databases, not e-journals or e-books. We may offer that functionality in the future, but right now the import is limited to databases only.
How do I set up my pre-existing guide to ensure it works with the import tool?
The key to setting up a pre-existing guide is making sure you have a Links & Lists box for each letter and one for #.
That means making sure you have 27 boxes in your guide, all named properly (you cannot combine letters in a box).
If you do not include a box (like q, for instance), the tool will create a page/box for that missing letter even if there are no databases to list on that page.
So it is very important to make sure you have all 27 boxes in your guide.
How you want to arrange these 27 boxes is up to you. You can have 1 page for everything, or have pages for A-F, G-L, M-R, S-Z and #. You can set up 1 page called A-Z and have subpages for each letter and #. It's really up to you.
Or you can just let the tool create a guide for you. :)
