Metadata Fields: Types

There are no predefined values or you need a variation of entered values.

You have fields for which a number is tracked.

You have a set of predefined values where folks can select only one option.

You have a set of predefined values where folks can select multiple options.

You want to have an item rated (good/bad, easy/difficult, etc.).

You want users to provide a date/time (event occurrence, requested date for an event, etc.)

question markWhat other cool stuff can you do with the fields?

  • Add instructions - appears as a blue i icon on the form.
    Folks mouse over the blue i icon and instructions appear. Add instructions like:
    • Enter last name only
    • Enter course as DDD#### (where D=Department). Example: ENG1000
    • Round time spent to the nearest half hour.
  • Make the field required.
    A red asterisk will appear next to the field name on the form if the field is required.
  • For Select fields, add a Comments box.
    Want to know why someone chose a specific option or what "other" means? Ask them! 
 

Metadata Fields: Display Options

Display Type:Description:Example:
Text Input Field
Each field allows for 256 characters total. The options below can be a useful visual cue as to how much information one should enter for each field.
Single Line Small box, single line of text. Free text field - single line
Textarea 5 Lines Displays up to 5 lines on the screen. Free text field - textarea
Numeric Input Field
The size limitation only refers to the width of the box, not the number of characters entered.
5 or 10 Characters Wide Displays a text box 5 or 10 characters wide. Numeric Input Field
Single Select Field
Each select field may have up to 50 values.
Dropdown Drop down list. Single Select field - dropdown box
Radio Horizontal Radio buttons displayed horizontally. Single Select - Radio Buttons Horizontal
Radio Vertical Radio buttons displayed vertically. Single Select - Radio Buttons Vertical
List Displays up to 5 values on the form (scroll for other values). Single Select - List
Comments Text Box (Optional) Displays a free text box below the select options. Select Field - Comments area
Multi Select Field
Each select field may have up to 50 values.
Vertical List Displays up to 5 values on the form (scroll for other values). Multi Select - List
Checkboxes Checkboxes displayed vertically. Multi Select - Checkboxes
Sliding Scale Value
Radio Buttons Displays 5 or 10 radio buttons with labels for the leftmost and rightmost options. Sliding Scale - Radio Buttons
Slider Widget Displays 5 or 10 step slider with labels for the leftmost and rightmost options.
Note: Leftmost option is 0. Users must move the scale over at least 1 notch to record a value.

Date/Time Field
Date & Time When clicked, displays both date and time options. Date/Time - Both
Date Only When clicked, displays date option. Date/Time - Date Only
Time Only When clicked, displays time option. Date/Time - Time Only
